The other day my palm started itching. It was one of those random things that you’d attend to and immediately forget about.

But not if you’re Nigerian.

You see, growing up, we were told that if your palms were itching, it meant someone was about to “dash” – meaning gift – you some money. Therefore, if you wanted to ensure the expected money got to you, it was best not to scratch the itch.

Easier said than done, you know.

So there I was. Staring at my palm, I wondered whether the powers that be would consider it “scratching” if I rubbed it across my legs ever so gently. Do the gods concern themselves with technicalities?

And it’s not just Nigerians. In Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and many other African communities, you’ll find variations of this belief. Some call it a myth. Others will laugh at you for calling it so.

Wherever you are on the palm-itching conversation, whether you subscribe to it or not, I wish you success. I also ask that you be prepared. For, as an Ethiopian proverb says, ” If you are going to a place where corn grows, take a cutting tool with you.”

May your palm itch, and may your luck come through. But above all, may your cutting tool be sharp.
